The Smallest Bedroom

     The smallest bedroom at four, Privet Drive, was Dudley’s second bedroom before Harry moves in – storing all the toys he could not fit in his first bedroom, most of which were broken. Harry relocates to this room after letters start appearing at the house addressed specifically to “Mr H. Potter, The Cupboard under the Stairs.”

     Harry, the Dursleys, and Dudley's friend Piers Polkiss visit the zoo on Dudley's birthday. They visit the reptile house, where Harry talks to a boa constrictor.

     Piers Polkiss, a scrawny boy with a face like a rat, is Dudley Dursley’s best friend and a fellow bully.

The Cupboard Under the Stairs

      Harry sleeps in a cupboard under the stairs at number four, Privet Drive, until the week of his eleventh birthday. Whenever the Dursleys notice anything strange happening around Harry, he is usually punished with long stretches of time confined to this cupboard. The small, cramped space is dark and full of spiders.

      When strange letters start appearing addressed to Harry in his cupboard, the Dursleys move Harry to the smallest bedroom in the house.

Mrs. Figg

      Mrs Figg lives two streets away from the Dursleys. Harry stays with Mrs Figg every time the Dursleys go out; she serves him stale cake in her cabbage-smelling house and makes him look at pictures of all the cats she has ever owned. After Mrs Figg breaks her leg, Harry is allowed to accompany the Dursleys to the zoo for Dudley’s eleventh birthday.




      Bayan Figg,Dursley'lerin 2 sokak uzağında yaşar. Dursley'ler ne zaman dışarı çıksa Harry,Bayan. Figg ile kalır : Bayan Figg lahana kokan evinde ona bayat kekler ikram eder,ona sahip olduğu tüm kedileri fotoğraflarını gösterir. Bayan Figg. bacağını kırdıktan sonra Harry'nin 11. doğum günü için hayvanat bahçesine giden Dudley'e eşlik etmesine izin verildi.

Dudley Dursley

      Dudley Dursley is Harry Potter’s only cousin, son of Petunia and Vernon Dursley. He’s about four times Harry’s size, and with his small, watery eyes and very little neck, he resembles his father, Vernon.

Hagrid

      Rubeus Hagrid is the Keeper of Keys at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is almost twice the height of a normal man and at least five times the width, with feet the size of baby dolphins and hands the size of dustbin lids. His black eyes glint like beetles and his face is almost completely hidden by a wild, tangled beard and bushy, black hair. Despite his size, Hagrid is gentle and warm. Hagrid lives with his large black boarhound in a wooden hut within the grounds at Hogwarts, at the edge of the Forbidden Forest. Professor Dumbledore says he would trust Hagrid with his life.


      Rubeus Hagrid Hogwarts Cadılık ve Büyücülük okulunda anahtarların sorumlusudur. Normal birinin 2 katı boyunda ve 5 katı genişliktedir;yavru yunus boyunda ayakları ve çöplerin kapağı büyüklüğünde elleri vardır.  Siyah gözleri bir böcek gibi ışıldar ve suratının büyük kısmı vahşi,dağınık sakalı ile gür ve siyah saçları arkasındadır. Hagrid,boyutuna rağmen kibar ve sıcaktır. Hogwarts arazisinde,Yasak Orman'ın kenarındaki siyah ahşap kulübesinde aşar. Profesör dumbledore ona hayatını bile emanet edebileceğini söyler.

      Albus Dumbledore uses this item – which looks like a silver cigarette lighter – to turn out all the lights on Privet Drive. Each time he clicks it, a light flickers out, eventually leaving the street in near-total darkness.

Owls

      Owls are magical creatures most often used for delivering post and parcels in the wizarding world. They are known for their speed and discretion and can find recipients without an address. First-year students are allowed to bring them to school as pets.

      On the day that Voldemort disappears, flocks of owls are seen flying across the English countryside.



     

      Baykuşlar,çoğunlukla posta gönderiminde kullanılan sihirli yaratıklardır. Hızları,sadakâtleri ve alıcının yerini bir adres olmadan da bulabilmeleriyle bilinirler. 1. Sınıf öğrencileri okula evcil hayvan olarak bir baykuş götürebilir.

Number Four, Privet Drive

     The name of the street where the Dursleys live is a reference to that most suburban plant, the privet bush, which makes neat hedges around many English gardens. I liked the associations with both suburbia and enclosure, the Dursleys being so smugly middle class, and so determinedly separate from the wizarding world. The name of their area is 'Little Whinging', which again sounds appropriately parochial and sniffy, 'whinging' being a colloquial term for 'complaining or whining' in British English.

     Although I describe the Dursleys' house as big and square, as befitted Uncle Vernon's status as a company director, whenever I wrote about it I was unconsciously visualising the second house I lived in as a child, which on the contrary was a rather small three-bedroomed house in the suburb of Winterbourne, near Bristol. I first became conscious of this when I entered the number four Privet Drive that had been built at Leavesden Studios, and found myself in an exact replica of my old house, down to the position of the cupboard under the stairs and the precise location of each room. As I had never described my old home to the set designer, director or producer, this was yet another of the unsettling experiences that filming the Potter books has brought me.

     For no very good reason, I have never been fond of the number four, which has always struck me as a rather hard and unforgiving number, which is why I slapped it on the Dursleys' front door.

     Dursley’lerin yaşadığı sokak,adını İngiliz bahçelerinde düzgün çitlerin vazgeçilmez bitkisi olan “Privet Bush”dan alıyor.  Onlarla ilgili olarak Dursley’lerin böbürlendikleri orta-sınıf yaşantısını  ve büyücü dünyasından kararlı ayrılıklarını muhafaza edecek olmaları hoşuma gitmişti.  Little Whinging ise adını,kibirli ve dar görüşlü olmasına uygun olacak şekilde söylenen ve İngiliz İngilizcesinde argoda “şikayet etmek-mızmızlanmak” anlamına gelen whining kelimesinden alıyor.

   Dursley’lerin evini Vernon’un şirket yöneticisi konumuna uygun olacak şekilde büyük ve kare olarak tasarlamış olmama rağmen,ne zaman bu konu üzerine yazsam farkında olmadan onu,çocukken 2. Olarak yaşadığım ve Bristol yakınlarında Winterbourne ‘deki 3 küçük yatak odalı eve benzettiğim.   Bu durumu ilk fark ettiğimde “Privet Drive,4 Numara” Leavesden Stüdyolarında inşa edilmişti. Kendimi eski evimin bir replikasıyla birlikte bulmuştum,merdiven altındaki dolap da diğer odalar da tamamen aynı konumdaydı. Eski evimi tasarımcı,yönetmen ya da yapımcıya tarif etmemiş olmama rağmen böyle olması Potter kitaplarının filme aktarılmasının bana getirdiği değişik tecrübelerden biriydi.

    Dursleyler’in kapısına yerleştirdiğim numaraya gelince; 4 numara benim için asla özel olmamıştır. Onun seçmemin de iyi bir nedeni yok,sadece zor unutulacak bir numara olarak düşünmüştüm.
